Philippines Special Resident Retiree's Visa (SRRV)

What is the Special Resident Retiree's Visa (SRRV)?

The Special Resident Retiree's Visa (SRRV) is a unique, long-term residency visa issued by the Philippine government specifically designed to attract foreign nationals and former Filipino citizens who wish to retire and live in the Philippines. It is one of the most attractive retirement visa programs in all of Southeast Asia, offering a wide range of benefits and privileges that make it highly appealing to retirees from all over the world.

Who Manages the SRRV?

The SRRV is jointly managed by two government agencies:

  • Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) — the primary agency that reviews, processes, and approves SRRV applications. The PRA was created specifically to promote the Philippines as a premier retirement destination and to oversee the welfare of foreign retirees living in the country.
  • Bureau of Immigration (BI) — the agency that officially issues the visa stamp in your passport once the PRA endorses your approved application.

Together, these two agencies ensure that foreign retirees are properly screened, welcomed, and supported throughout their stay in the Philippines.

Who Can Apply for the SRRV?

The SRRV is available to the following individuals:

  • Foreign nationals aged 40 and above who wish to retire in the Philippines
  • Former Filipino citizens (also known as Balikbayans) who have acquired foreign citizenship and wish to return to the Philippines for retirement
  • Accompanying dependents such as a spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 may also be included in the application

The minimum age was recently lowered to 40 years old, making it accessible to early retirees and not just those of traditional retirement age.

What Kind of Visa is It Exactly?

The SRRV is classified as a special non-immigrant visa. This means:

  • It is not a tourist visa — so you are not limited to just 30 or 59 days of stay
  • It is not a regular immigrant visa — you do not need to go through the full permanent residency immigration process
  • It sits in a special category created specifically for retirees, giving you most of the benefits of permanent residency without the full complexity of regular immigration

Once granted, the SRRV gives you the right to live in the Philippines indefinitely, with the freedom to leave and return whenever you want.

Key Features and Benefits of the SRRV

Here is what makes the SRRV stand out from ordinary visas:

1. Indefinite Stay

Unlike a tourist visa that expires every 30 to 59 days and requires constant extensions, the SRRV has no expiration date. Once you have it, you can stay in the Philippines for as long as you wish without worrying about overstaying or renewing your visa.

2. Multiple Entry and Exit Privileges

SRRV holders can freely enter and exit the Philippines as many times as they want without needing to apply for re-entry permits or special return certificates. This is a huge convenience for retirees who travel frequently or have family abroad.

3. Refundable Bank Deposit

One of the core requirements of the SRRV is placing a dollar-denominated deposit in a PRA-accredited Philippine bank. The good news is that this deposit is fully refundable if you ever decide to cancel your SRRV and leave the Philippines permanently. It is not a fee you lose — it is essentially your money held securely in a Philippine bank.

4. Customs Duty Exemption

SRRV holders are entitled to bring in personal effects and household goods worth up to US$7,000 completely tax and duty free when they first relocate to the Philippines. This can save you a significant amount of money when shipping your belongings from your home country.

5. No Student Visa Required for Dependents

If you bring your minor children as dependents on your SRRV, they are allowed to study in any Philippine school or university without needing a separate student visa or study permit. This is a practical and money-saving benefit for retirees with younger children.

6. Greet & Assist Program

SRRV holders are entitled to the Greet & Assist Program at selected Philippine international airports, where PRA representatives assist you through immigration and customs — making your arrival in the Philippines smooth and hassle-free.

7. Investment Conversion Option

Your required bank deposit does not have to sit idle. You have the option to convert your deposit into an active investment in the Philippines, such as:

  • Purchasing a condominium unit
  • Entering a long-term lease of a house and lot
  • Buying golf or country club shares

This allows your retirement funds to work for you while you enjoy your life in the Philippines.

8. Security and Peace of Mind

The SRRV gives you legal status in the Philippines backed by the government. You are not living on a tourist visa that can be questioned or denied renewal — you have an officially recognized residency status that is protected under Philippine law.

How Much Does It Cost?

The SRRV requires two main financial commitments:

One-Time Application Fee

  • US$1,500 for the principal applicant
  • US$300 per accompanying dependent

Required Bank Deposit (Refundable)

AgeWith Monthly PensionWithout Pension50 years old and aboveUS$15,000US$30,00040 to 49 years oldUS$25,000US$50,000

Annual Membership Fee

  • US$360 per year (covers the principal applicant and up to two dependents), paid to the PRA to maintain your membership and enjoy continued benefits.

What Documents Do You Need?

To apply, you generally need the following:

  • Valid passport with a current Tourist Visa (9a)
  • Bureau of Immigration Clearance Certificate (BICC)
  • Police clearance from your home country (apostilled)
  • NBI clearance (if you've been in the Philippines for more than 30 days)
  • Medical examination report using the PRA's official form
  • Health insurance coverage
  • Proof of pension (if applicable)
  • Proof of inward bank remittance of the required deposit
  • 8 pieces of 2x2 ID photos
  • Marriage certificate and birth certificates for dependents (apostilled)

How Long Does Processing Take?

The entire process from submission of complete documents to issuance of the visa typically takes 30 to 45 working days. You must be physically present in the Philippines throughout the entire application process.

Why Choose the Philippines for Retirement?

Beyond the visa itself, the Philippines offers retirees an incredibly attractive lifestyle:

  • Low cost of living compared to Western countries
  • English is widely spoken — one of the most English-proficient countries in Asia
  • Warm tropical climate year-round
  • Friendly and hospitable people
  • Beautiful beaches, islands, and natural scenery
  • World-class healthcare facilities especially in Metro Manila and major cities
  • A large expat community so you'll never feel alone

The SRRV is essentially the Philippines' official invitation to foreign retirees to make the country their permanent home — backed by government support, financial security, and a wide range of lifestyle benefits that few other countries in the world can match at such an accessible cost.
